Shanghai/Chengdu. From 26 August to 4 September, Porsche presented its all model series at Chengdu Motor Show 2022. With a colourful theme of “Paint to Sample”, the Porsche booth revisited the shades of old classics, while also offering a glimpse into the future of modern luxury. The 8 cars on display all came in classic colours popular among Porsche fans. Each of the special paint finishes is the key symbol to an iconic colour from Porsche’s unique 74-year history. Nowadays, these bespoke colours have been brought back to life through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, to embody a distinctive style and the self-expression of modern luxury. At the same time, Porsche China also announced the collaboration with Chinese contemporary abstract artist, Ding Yi, to present an exlusive and out-fo-the-box customisation of Porsche’s all-electric sports car Taycan, making it a mobile artwork travels through the urban city.

"Every bespoke shade on display here can be traced back to a significant model in Porsche’s history, such as the Gulforange 911 and the Gulfblue 911. We can trace their origins back to the legendary 917 in Gulf livery, one of Porsche’s long-time winner at Le Mans”, said Michael Kirsch, President and CEO of Porsche China. “In the past, luxury often made people feel prescribed. Today, it is defined by the customers, and is therefore less formal and more personal. This is because the Gen Z perceive themselves as ‘personal brand’ with unique expressions. All along, we at Porsche resonate with our customers, inspiring and underlining their own personalities and lifestyles, as well as interpreting new concepts of modern luxury."

In addition, the Porsche 996 Swan – a distinctive and unique artwork – also made an appearance at Chengdu’s fashionable icon, Taikoo Li, during Chengdu Motor Show 2022. The car was designed by Scottish artist Chris Labrooy based on the 911 (996), the first car sold in the Chinese mainland 20 years ago. Its arrival in Chengdu provides a glimpse at the beauty of modern luxury for sports car art and the unlimited creativity of dreamers.

Porsche joins hands with artist Ding Yi to explore the infinite possibilities of artistic expression for sports cars

"In the beginning I looked around and could not find the car I dreamed of. So I decided to build it myself." Ferry Porsche’s dream of the perfect sports car started the pursuit of a never-ending path for the German sports car manufacturer. One of China's leading figures in contemporary abstract art, Ding Yi, is also a bold dreamer and a relentless explorer. This time, Porsche China and Ding Yi are joining hands to explore the infinite possibilities of artistic expression for sports cars in the era of electrification.

Since the 1980s, Ding Yi has established his unique art style using the symbol "cross", and has continued to explore and practice to make it to the next level. From black and white to fluorescent colour, from the Chinese charater "ten" to the symbol "cross", from realistic brushstrokes to digital simulations, it forms many horizontal and vertical "crosses". This originally meaningless printing technology symbol evolves inside Ding Yi’s artistic grid inch by inch. Ding Yi believes that the essence can be extended to the depths of painting through different paths, enabling artwork with lasting power. This worldview displayed on Ding Yi’s diverse canvasses concides with Porsche's belief. Just like Porsche's consistent and rigorous craftsmanship, it strives to maximize the purest driving pleasure with precise control.

Ding Yi will integrate his own artistic concept into the customization of Taycan. This absolutely unique and timeless masterpiece will be created by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, which is expected to hit the road in the middle of next year. “Our peers in Zuffenhausen, with decades of Manufaktur expertise, will give Ding Yi’s ideas a unique shape, through their passionate and precise hand craftsmanship”, said Mr. Michael Kirsch. “We look forward to seeing this unique custimised car become a mobile artwork that travels through cities, allowing drivers to become communicators of art and inspiring the construction of a new art ecology."
